What is the difference between Juvéderm and Juvéderm with lidocaine?
Juvéderm and other dermal fillers like Restylane can be uncomfortable. Dr. Minuk had minimized this discomfort by using local anesthesia to numb the treatment area. ALLERGAN, the makers of Juvéderm, have incorporated the lidocaine (numbing medicine) into the syringe so that treatment is now very comfortable.
Juvéderm™ is a soft replenishing injectable gel. Made from hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring sugar found in your body, it adds volume to minimize the appearance of wrinkles, thinning skin and lips. Hyaluronic acid injections have also been shown to stimulate collagen production. The results are instant and natural-looking.
A Juvéderm™ treatment typically takes 10-20 minutes and results are immediate. Plus, there’s minimal recovery or downtime. So you can step into our SkinClinic for treatment and step right back into your life.
What to Expect:
Before you go: Dr. Minuk recommends that you avoid any medications that can prolong bleeding, such as aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDS), for at least a week prior to treatment in order to reduce the risk of bruising and bleeding at the injection site.
When you arrive: If this is your first visit, we will ask about your medical history, including any allergies you may have or medications you may be taking, and will tell you more about wrinkle treatment
Determining your treatment needs:
Dr. Minuk and his team will examine the soft tissue of your face to assess the depth of wrinkles and folds and determine your treatment. Pre-treatment photographs are usually taken so you can see the difference after treatment!
Before the procedure: Although anesthesia is not required, Dr. Minuk may use injectible anesthesia to numb the treatment area first.
The procedure: The procedure is quick and easy. The injection itself typically takes a few minutes but plan to be with us for approximately one hour.
After the procedure: For the first 24 hours following treatment, you should avoid strenuous exercise, excessive sun or heat exposure, and consumption of alcoholic beverages. You may experience mild redness and swelling for a day or so. Any swelling can be reduced with an ice pack and by keeping the head elevated with a couple of pillows while sleeping.
Seeing results: You should see an immediate improvement in the treatment areas. Most patients require only one treatment to achieve optimal wrinkle smoothing or volume enhancement. However, results may vary and correction is temporary. Supplemental “touch-up” treatments may be required to achieve and maintain optimal results.

What is Restylane?
Restylane is a long-lasting and crystal-clear gel for filling out lips, facial wrinkles and facial folds.
The hyaluronic acid in Restylane is almost identical to that naturally found in the body. The product is naturally integrated into the tissue, allowing important nutritive agents to pass freely through the implant and cells to pass between fragments of the gel.
Restylane contains hyaluronic acid in the form of a crystal-clear gel injected into the skin to lift the lip, wrinkle or fold. Once in the skin, Restylane works together with the body’s own hyaluronic acid and joins forces to create volume. Unlike permanent implants, Restylane always leaves you a choice when the effect of the treatment has worn off.
How long does it last?
Treatments with Restylane and Perlane may last over year. Lip enhancement may last up to six months.
Is it safe?
Restylane is not extracted from animals. This means no risk of allergic reactions. Therefore, Restylane is safe to use instantly without pre-testing.
Restylane Skinboosters: What is it?
Restylane Skinboosters™ is a filler treatment which improves skin hydration, firmness and luminosity through micro-injections of a very soft hyaluronic acid filler into the skin (Restylane Vital or Vital Light).
How does it work? How is Skinboosters different from other fillers?
Fillers typically work by filling up volume deficiencies and lifting the skin. Skinboosters on the other hand, are extremely soft. Instead of exerting mechanical effects, they work via biochemical properties.
The family of Restylane fillers differ in thickness and lifting capacity. Harder fillers such as Perlane and Juvederm Voluma are great for lifting the cheeks. Skinboosters are softer and serve to hydrate and rejuvenate the skin.
Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring sugar molecule in our skin. It gives our skin the plumpness and hydration associated with youthful looking skin. However, over time, our skin loses collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid and it b ecomes drier, rougher and less elastic.
Restylane Skinboosters reverse the skin aging process by reintroducing hyaluronic acid into the skin. Once injected, the water-loving hyaluronic acid molecules start to absorb water up to 200 times its weight and swell, bring about profound hydration to the skin from inside out. With dramatically improved hydration, the skin looks plumper, brighter and youthful.
At the same time, Restylane Vital start to stimulate collagen production once injected, giving a long term, anti-aging effects.
What are the benefits?
Restylane Skinboosters are excellent for improving skin texture and tone. Unknown to most, the Skinboosters also improve acne scars by plumping them up. The benefits of the treatment include:
- Smoother Skin
- Improvement in fine lines and wrinkles
- Firmer skin
- Brighter, more luminous skin
- Better skin hydration
- Improvement in acne scars
Which areas can be treated?
Restylane Skinboosters is most often performed on the face and neck, but other areas on the body such as the décolletage can also be treated. In particular, the treatment works extremely well to rejuvenate the hands.
How are SkinBoosters administered?
Restylane Skinboosters are injected in the skin via micro-injections either with a needle and syringe or a micrco-needling device.
What is the treatment regime? How long does it last?
Restylane Skinboosters is best done every month for 3 treatments. The initial injection regime is to ensure that the skin is saturated with hyaluronic acid, and that the treatment kickstarts collagen production process to reverse skin aging.
Additional treatments are done every 6 months. The treatments last about 6 months.
Who is suitable for the treatment?
Anyone can benefit from this treatment, but in particular, people with dry or aged dull skin, with large pores, will see the most results, People who have depressed acne scars may also benefit.
What are the downsides of Restylane Skinboosters? Any side effects?
The biggest downside is cost. 3 treatments monthly can be costly. But the good news is that after the initial course, you only need to do it once every 6 months.
Injection related side effects, such as temporary swelling, bruising and pin-pricks marks will occur. The degree of these side effects will depend on how sensitive your skin is, the methods you doctor uses to inject, and of course his or her skill as well. When injected precisely and accurately into the right skin layer, there will be minimal bruising – most of my patients do not have a problem going back to work and other social activities.
Bumpiness on the skin can occur – because these are fillers after all. However, these are mostly temporary and resolve quickly with some gentle massage.
What preparations do I need to make?
Avoid alcohol, anti-inflammatories such as Advil, Motrin and Naprosyn, and any supplements which can thin the blood (including Vitamin E, garlic, ginseng) for 7-10 days before treatment.
Anything I need to look for?
Restylane Skinboosters refers to a treatment which specifically uses the Restylane fillers – Vital and Vital Light. Treatment is performed by Dr. Minuk or under his direction. Restylane Vital and Vital Light give such good results because both possess the right properties which can give your skin long lasting hydration and effects.
In general, it takes 2mls of filler to treat the whole face, and 3mls to treat the face and neck, but this can vary. If you are on a tight budget, consider treating the entire face, but only parts of it (for example, only the cheeks and forehead) which you are most concerned about.
Skinboosters come with some degree of downtime, as it involves numerous injections. So remember to have it done at least a week before your important event.
Sculptra treatment in Winnipeg
Sculptra treatment by Dr. Minuk. When injected stimulates production of collagen, the product can last 18 months or more.
Sculptra, a new injectable for lines, wrinkles and facial aging has received Health Canada approval. And better still, it is now available in our SkinClinic. Sculptra restores lost volume and firmness and has been called the ‘Liquid FaceLift’ and the ‘FaceLift from a Bottle’.
Dr. Minuk is one of the first 20 Canadian MD’s trained in Sculptra application and is a trainer of Canadian MD’s in Sculptra use and technique.
Sculptra is not a filler like Restylane but stimulates the skin to produce ‘collagen’ in areas it is injected. Skin thickens and is fuller. Wrinkles and lines diminish. Sculptra is safe (used in more than 150,00 patients in over 30 countries) and long lasting…~2-3 years…..in most cases.
Now the scoop on Sculptra
Sculptra is an injectable product that is intended to restore and correct the signs of facial fat loss. Sculptra is not made from human or animal sources and does not require a skin test. Sculptra is composed of poly-L-lactic acid, a synthetic product. Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) is biocompatible (does not harm the body) and biodegradable (able to be broken down by the body). PLLA has been widely used for many years in dissolvable stitches, soft tissue implants, and other types of implants.
Sculptra is effective when used for wrinkles and furrows and the thinning, aging face. It makes the skin appear smoother and firmer, enabling it to resemble its previous elasticity. Sculptra provides an increase in the skin thickness of the areas where volume (fat) and collagen has been lost, helping to restore fullness to the face for a more natural appearance.
What are the treatments like?
Treatments with Sculptra take 15-30 minutes and are performed personally by Dr. Minuk. A topical anesthetic cream or injection may be applied to the treatment area. Then, using a small needle, Sculptra is placed beneath the surface of the skin, in the area of your soft tissue loss.
How many treatments will I need?
During your consultation, the Dr. Minuk doctor will examine you and discuss the appropriate number of treatment sessions and estimate the amount of Sculptra you will require at each session. Most patients require 1-3 treatment sessions every 4-6 weeks. Some patients may also do best with a combination of Sculptra and another filling substance. Severe soft tissue loss usually requires three to six treatment sessions.
How soon will I see results?
The results from Sculptra are not immediate. Sculptra provides a gradual increase in soft tissue and skin thickness. However, the effects of Sculptra are long lasting. Touch-up treatments may be needed to maintain the desired effects.
What results can be expected?
Excellent results can be achieved with Sculptra when treating all parts of the face including the forehead, around the eyes and lips, between the mouth and nose, and the cheeks. Sculptra can add volume to the cheeks, to folds around the chin, and to rings around the eyes. It is equally effective on the neck and lower neckline. It can also be used to treat the hands, knees and ankles as well as certain types of scars.
What is recovery like?
There is minimal if any ‘down-time’. You will experience mild facial swelling for a few days. Some patients have a few bruises from injections which also settles within a few days but is easily covered with make-up. Occasionally, small bumps may form in the treated area. Local massage to the area usually can treat these should they occur.
